In our Automotive Technology program, you will gain plenty of hands-on experience.
For example, you will inspect, remove and replace various bearings, shafts, hubs,
and seals associated with manual drivetrains and axles. You will diagnose, repair,
or replace clutches and verify proper operations. You will learn about suspension
and braking systems.
In class, you’ll have the opportunity to diagnose, repair, and verify proper operation
of engines and test cooling systems and components as well as heating and air conditioning
systems. You will also inspect and repair vehicle wiring, connectors and circuit protection
devices, batteries, and starting and charging systems.

Policies
If you can be identified as a "High Risk Driver," you may find it impossible to find
employment in the automotive service and repair field. For this reason, it is strongly
recommended that each student enrolling in the Automotive Technology program have
a clean driving record. LBCC students who do not have a good driving record are strongly
encouraged to enroll in an educational program that will not require the operation
of vehicles.
A valid driver’s license and proof of insurance for any vehicles you may drive to
LBCC will also be needed.
For your reference, here is a typical set of hiring standards:
Candidates may not be hired if they are identified as a High Risk Driver. Candidates
are High Risk if the Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check indicates that the driver has
one or more of the following violations within the last five years:
- Conviction for an alcohol and/or drug related driving offense,
- Refusal to submit to alcohol/drug testing,
- Conviction of speeding in excess of 20 MPH, or
- Criminal conviction (e.g. felony, negligent homicide, manslaughter, hit and run, etc.).
Other violations incurred in the last three years:
- Any combination of three or more: moving violations, At-Fault Accidents, Preventable
Accidents;
- Driving with a suspension, revocation, or administrative restriction;
- Leaving the scene of an accident as defined by state laws; or
- Reckless driving.
Other violations incurred in the last 12 months:
- Any combination of two or more: moving violations, At-Fault Accidents, Preventable
Accidents.
Any person hired must submit the following materials before a conditional offer of
employment is made:
- A copy of a current driver’s license,
- A copy of a current five-year MVR from the DMV, and
- A copy of proof of automobile insurance and current registration.
The above regulations are for example only. Specific definitions of a "High Risk"
driver depend upon the Liability Insurance Policy for any potential employer. This
information is provided to prevent you from investing your educational budget towards
a career that you will be unable to pursue.
