Student Stories
Wondering what your career journey might look like with a communications or journalism degree? Here’s how these LBCC students experienced it.
Eric Noll
Graduate of Portland State University, BA in Political Science
Eric attributed many of his professional successes to what he gained from Public Speaking, Argument Critical Discourse, and Interpersonal Communication.
“The ability to engage in civil discourse has been central to my success. Whether I was arguing in student government, pushing a policy with the president of my university, or lobbying on a bill, the skills that I gained from my Communication courses have been the most useful in my work.
“These classes helped me articulate my ideas and values. They also provided strategies for working constructively with a diverse group of people. I've turned the communication skills that I developed at LBCC into many positive, tangible impacts. Communication courses are not just about learning how to give a great speech or work out a disagreement; they can also help you become a valuable asset within an organization.”
Grant Garcia
Graduate of Oregon State University, BA in Speech Communication
Grant didn’t know what he wanted to do when he began college. He’s thankful that LBCC offered an inexpensive way to explore a variety of subjects.
“I'm a huge proponent of the community college model. LBCC provides a quality education accessible to students from diverse backgrounds. Many instructors knew me by name and made me feel like more than just a line item on a roll sheet.”
Grant’s communication courses cultivated his ability to work well with others in a professional setting. “These courses prepared me to go above and beyond in my job. I feel at ease dealing with workplace conflicts and don’t shy away from opportunities to tackle new challenges, when asked,” he said.
To current LBCC students, Grant said, “Communication classes set you apart. In the workplace, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference in excelling and advancing at your job. Developing excellent communication skills in college is one of the best investments you can make for yourself."
