Cooperative Work Experience & Practicum

LBCC’s Child & Family Studies program offers hands-on learning opportunities to work with children while pursuing your degree.

Cooperative Work Experience

Students seeking additional experiences working with children are encouraged to enroll in CWE courses. The CWE coordinator maintains a list of approved sites, which are located in Corvallis and Albany. Students enrolled in the One-year Certificate Program can earn up to 12 CWE elective credits; students in the Associate of Applied Science Degree can earn up to 14.

Practicum (Student Teaching)

In the second year of your Associate of Applied Science Degree, you’ll participate in practicum or student teaching. Under the supervision of a mentor, you’ll apply the knowledge and skills you’ve learned while working directly with children. In addition to the LBCC lab school, college students are placed at community sites located in Corvallis, Albany, and Lebanon.

Note, in addition to inoculation and documentation requirements, students participating in these experiences must obtain a valid Food Handler’s Permit. They must also complete the free Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety and Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect courses. Finally, two-year (AAS) degree students need to complete a Central Background Registry check before entering into their student teaching (practicum) experience.
