Education for All

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
Over the past couple of weeks I have been visited by a number of amazing faculty and staff, sharing with me the concerns that some of our students have about their future safety. The worry that their race, gender, nationality, political or religious beliefs might be used to single them out and threaten their ability to pursue the very education that we are committed to providing them. One of these faculty shared with me written comments from students in one of her classes and, as I have read them again (and again), I am moved to tears by the anxiety that some of our students feel.
And, I am moved to say something too... Something that I hope will be an assurance and affirmation of our shared commitment to a purpose that stands against anything that would threaten the safe pursuit of a better life by any who come to us, and who are a part of the LBCC community.
Our Mission states that it is our purpose "to engage in an education that enables ALL OF US to participate in, contribute to, and benefit from the cultural richness and economic vitality of our communities." I have added my personal emphasis to the words "all of us" because this is the part of our Mission that is feared to be under threat. I would also suggest that the emphasis is already there. There, in our commitment to Equity in our Strategic Goals, and there in our commitment to Inclusion in our Statement of Values. We are built on the foundational premise that no distinctions, no variables of our differences, no means of disaggregation or separation can be used to limit the educational opportunity that we have committed ourselves to providing for ALL. All of our students, all of us.
Our Mission rings hollow if the word "All" is missing or is in any way compromised. And so, as I have considered these visits from dear faculty and staff, and have also considered this season of thanks for all that has been given us –entrusted to us– not just for our own benefit but for us to share in benefit to others, I want to recommit myself to the "All" in our Mission, and to all of you. We have been a community college for ALL who come, and I commit myself to ensuring that this will remain true of us into the future. I want to invite all of you to do the same. I believe that it is in this manner that we together will be best positioned to protect and inspire all whom we serve.

Estimados Estudiantes, Profesorado y Miembros del personal:
Durante las últimas dos semanas, he sido visitado por un número de maravillosos profesores y miembros del personal, que compartieron conmigo una serie de preocupaciones que algunos de nuestros estudiantes tienen acerca de su seguridad en el futuro.
La preocupación es que su raza, género, nacionalidad o creencias religiosas, pueda ser usada para aislarlos y amenazar su capacidad de perseguir la misma educación que estamos comprometidos a proporcionarles. Uno de estos miembros del profesorado compartió conmigo comentarios por escrito de estudiantes de una de sus clases y al leerlas una y otra vez me conmovió hasta las lágrimas por la ansiedad que algunos de nuestros estudiantes sienten.
Y me motivo a decir algo también…Algo que espero sea una garantía y reafirmación de nuestro compromiso compartido, con un propósito que se opone a cualquier cosa que amenace la búsqueda segura de una vida mejor, para cualquier persona que venga a nosotros, cualquiera que sea parte de la comunidad de LBCC.
Nuestra misión afirma que nuestro propósito es “participar en una educación que permita a TODOS NOSOTROS participar, contribuir y beneficiarnos de la riqueza cultural y vitalidad económica de nuestras comunidades”. He añadido mi personal énfasis a las palabras “todos nosotros” porque esta es la parte de nuestra Misión, que se teme estar bajo amenaza. También sugeriría que el énfasis ya está allí. Allí en nuestro compromiso con la “Equidad de nuestras Metas Estratégicas” y ahí en nuestro compromiso de inclusión en nuestra “Declaración de Valores”. Nos basamos en la premisa fundamental de que ninguna distinción, ninguna variable de nuestras diferencias, ningún medio de disgregación o separación puede ser usado, para limitar la oportunidad de educación a la que nos comprometimos a proveer a TODOS. A todos nuestros estudiantes, todos nosotros.
Nuestra Misión sonaría hueca si la palabra “Todos” faltará o estuviera de alguna manera comprometida. Por esto, así como he considerado estas visitas de nuestro querido profesorado y miembros del personal, también he considerado esta oportunidad, para agradecer a todos los que nos otorgaron su confianza- no sólo para nuestro propio beneficio, sino para que podamos compartir este beneficio con los demás, deseo volver a comprometerme con el “Todos” de nuestra Misión, y con todos ustedes. Hemos sido un colegio comunitario para TODOS los que vienen, y me comprometo para asegurar que esto siga siendo verdad para nosotros en el futuro. Quiero invitar a todos a hacer lo mismo. Creo que es de esta manera que juntos, estaremos mejor posicionados para proteger e inspirar a todos a quienes servimos.
