Academic Standing Policy

LBCC calculates academic standing for all degree-seeking students who are registered for credit classes each term. Students are notified via their LBCC email of their academic standing soon after grades are in for the given term, typically the middle of the week following finals week.

The following criteria are considered in calculating a student's academic standing:

  1. Cumulative (Overall) GPA - cumulative GPA must be 2.00 or greater to remain in good Academic Standing.
  2. Term GPA - term GPA must be 2.00 or greater to remain in good Academic Standing.
  3. Number of credits attempted

Students who experience academic difficulty and are not in good standing are offered multiple resources and supports to improve their grades. If a student’s GPA continues to fall below LBCC’s expectation of 2.00, they may be academically suspended from the College and not be allowed to register for classes.

To refer to the full policy, please see AR 4020-11 in our Administrative Rules and Board Policies.

Note: LBCC Academic Standing requirements are not the same as Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress standards. Students may be required to submit separate appeals for academic standing suspension and financial aid. Refer to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for more information.

Academic Standing Flow Chart

  • Good Standing
    • Student has both a term and cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above.
    • Students can return to Good Standing from Academic Warning or Academic Probation status once their term and cumulative GPA are both above a 2.00.
  • Academic Warning
    • Student meets one of the following conditions:
      • their term GPA drops below 2.00, or
      • their cumulative GPA is below a 2.00 and they have attempted 36 credits or less.
  • Academic Probation
    • Student meets one of the following conditions:
      • they are on Academic Warning or Academic Probation and their term GPA is below a 2.00 and they have attempted 18 or more credits, or
      • their cumulative GPA is below a 2.00 and they have attempted 37 or more credits.
    • Students can continue to be on Academic Probation as long as they continue to earn a term GPA of a 2.00 or above.
  • Academic Suspension
    • Students on Academic Probation who have attempted 37 or more credits, and earn below a 2.00 term GPA, and have a cumulative GPA below a 2.00 are on Academic Suspension.
    • Students who are academically suspended may not enroll in classes without an approved Academic Suspension appeal (see “Appealing to Return,” below).

Appealing to Return
If a student is academically suspended, they must complete a Suspension Appeal Form that has to be reviewed and approved before they are permitted to return. If their appeal is approved, the student is still on Academic Suspension in a “Reinstated” status.
Note: even if the student sits out for one or more terms, they still must complete an appeal when they are ready to return for their next term.
