Linn-Benton Community College Announces New Music Education Program to Begin This Fall

Linn-Benton Community College recently announced it will offer the state’s first associate’s degree in music education to begin fall term 2021.

A.S. in Music Education
LBCC’s new A.S. in Music Education program will prepare students for education careers in music. The program provides a foundation of basic musicianship through theory, aural skills, piano, ensemble work, and individual lessons that are required by most four-year colleges and universities.

While tailored toward students who would like to teach in K-12 schools, the degree will also be suitable for those individuals who want to work as professional musicians, or teach individual lessons. The degree shares many characteristics with LBCC’s current A.S. in Music degree, but requires specific education courses.

“The required courses in education and an Introduction to Music Education course gives our students a clearer path to a music education bachelor’s degree and helps prepare them for careers as teachers,” said program director Raymund Ocampo.

The program was designed to offer a seamless transition from LBCC to Oregon State University, and it is now the only two-year program in Oregon that transfers music education teachers. “We saw a gap and we needed to bridge that gap,” said Ocampo.

According to Ocampo the development of the program “was supported 100%” by LBCC’s partners at OSU. “They know that the quality of our students is really high, and that they’ll be able to succeed at OSU,” stated Ocampo.

The inaugural program offering begins this fall. Open registration begins August 2, 2021.
