Athletic Teams help Hoover Elementary Kick-Off Read-a-Thon

athletics-hoover-readingHoover Elementary School in Corvallis got a little help from Linn-Benton Community College student-athletes today as they kicked off their annual Husky Read-a-Thon fundraising event.

More than 24 LBCC student-athletes from each of the college's four sport teams participated in the community outreach event, which was organized by Men’s Basketball Coach Everett Hartman.

"The wife of a former student of mine, who works at Hoover, asked if we'd be interested in helping," said Hartman. "I thought it would be a great way for our players to give back to the community."

Last year, Hoover students reported reading more than 80,000 minutes during the Husky Read-a-Thon, which raises funds to support classroom enhancement at Hoover.

"It was a lot of fun seeing how excited the kids are about reading," said Ellie Weber, a sophomore volleyball player from Roseburg. "Having the opportunity to connect with the students, especially since I am going to school to become a teacher, was so special."
