ADMINISTRATIVE RULE NO: 5035-01

TITLE: STUDENT INSURANCE COVERAGE

PURPOSE
To clarify LBCC's and students' responsibilities in regard to health and liability insurance coverage.

STATEMENT
Occasionally students incur injuries or loss of property while participating in Linn-Benton Community College classes or activities. Tuition and fees paid to LBCC do not include medical/dental/disability or theft insurance. It is the individual student's responsibility to acquire the necessary insurance dependent upon their needs. The college reserves the right to require students who are enrolled in high-risk courses or programs, or who participate in high-risk student activities, to purchase accident insurance.

In classes involving clinical experience, cooperative work experience, or other course-required work which takes place at an employer worksite, K-12 classroom, or off-site locations for students, arrangements will be made in advance for liability and workers' compensation coverage. This is not automatic and requires prior arrangement with Human Resources and the Safety and Loss Prevention director. LBCC also furnishes a limited excess medical plan for athletes in varsity programs. Both workers' compensation and athletic insurance programs are very specific in applications covering relatively few students.

LBCC's liability insurance will provide coverage to the college only when it is legally determined that the college staff was negligent or performed a wrongful act. All students are encouraged to personally comply with legal requirements for health insurance. International students on an LBCC-issued I-20 are required to maintain health insurance each term for which they are registered.
